Are they available for use other than during group classes? Or must we bring our own?

I have not been to CI but at other clubs they are available for private use and not just for lessons. However, there needs to be a tennis GO present to hand them out at the court. When they are not there, the racquets are locked up. GOs are there in the morning during lessons and in the late afternoon usually 4-6 pm. (There usually is a drop-off slot to return racquets if the GOs are not around such as if you play late and the GOs have left.) Otherwise you might be able to borrow some from the main desk. However, I am not sure about this. The tennis GOs now seem to allow people to borrow balls but they can be pretty used at times. (However, CM seems to be better at replacing the practice balls.) You can buy balls at the boutique but they are expensive. I generally bring a can or two and if I use them, I leave them with the GOs. Hope this helps.

If you are planning to play on your own (or even if you're going for lessons or to participate in any of the tournaments), you'd be better off bringing your own racquets & some new tennis balls. My husband, who plays every afternoon when we're at Columbus Isle, actually brings 2 racquets in case he breaks a string (but we're usually there for several weeks each trip). I'm not sure if any racquets or balls are available at any time when the tennis instructor-GO's are not there; but if you're used to playing with your own racquet you'll want to bring it.
