Stomach bug

Has anyone who visited Columbus Isle in January or thereabouts had a stomach virus? My doctor just diagnosed me with C Diff. Because my diarrhea began right after my trip, my doctor thinks it probably originated there. I contacted Club Med about this last week before I knew it was C Diff, asking if they'd heard anything about stomach bugs going around at that time, and I've been told the response may take up to 8 weeks. They referred me to their insurance department (not sure what they have to do with stomach bugs; you'd think they'd refer me to the medical clinic at Columbus). They have not responded yet.

This is frustrating because I have been sick to my stomach for months and my OB blamed it on pregnancy. I finally saw a gastroenterologist who diagnosed me correctly. Fortunately it has, for the most part, been a more mild case of C Diff. Apparently it can kill you, so I feel lucky! If you had a stomach bug after visiting there, this may be what you have.

Thanks,
Lauren

Lauren,

I found this online about C. Diff. It doesn't seem like something you are likely to catch at a resort:

http://www.phac-aspc.gc.ca/id-mi/cdiff-eng.php
C. difficile is one of the most common diarrheal infections in hospitals and long-term care facilities.
Healthy people dont usually get C. difficile. People who have other illnesses or conditions requiring the use of antibiotics and the elderly are at greater risk of infection.

Lauren,

I agree that C. Diff is not usually something you catch at a resort or convention (like Legionnaires Disease). I have become somewhat of an expert on it after my mother contracted it in Nov 2009 during a hospital visit for a minor matter. As CI Fan says, this is usually where you get it (due to hospital staff not washing their hands between patients, mainly).

I am very sorry you are sick with this because yes, it is miserable, it can come back and you are right that in the wrong person, it can be deadly. Best of luck to you.

Trish
