I am going to Columbus Isle in 2 weeks and was wondering what the status is on WiFi! Is it like the other properties and only available in the reception area and main bar area and really hit or miss? Anyone know how much it costs, etc. I am traveling by myself and am thinking it would be good to be able to check in with the homefront periodically, but in Punta and La Caravelle it was not easily accessible... any feedback?

Hi sbphyn,
When I was there in April, the wifi was Extremely slow, and on several occasions not working. Some of this was because of teenagers who would sit at the CM computers and facebook all day (really? yes.). I had a bit of business to take care of over the course of the week, and had a fair amount of trouble downloading things like pdfs. I understand that it's an island, but my personal feeling is that the shoddy internet is really because nobody at the club is responsible for IT, and they don't want to pay their consultants to come deal with it. The upside is, it was free.

I was there in late June and accessing the internet using their computers was free - but that was because the server kept going down. Normally, you have to pay, but the prices are reasonable. One or two people with laptops said if they went into the computer room with their computer, they could access the Wifi with no problem.

But I completely agree with Eqeao about the teenagers and Facebook. They were in there constantly - one of them on line with at least 3 friends sitting behind him/her, all shrieking and laughing. It made it very hard to concentrate and it's really a problem the Club needs to deal with, but I doubt they will.

Enjoy Columbus! And hey - don't miss the chicken wraps at the Beach Bar - delicious!

As for the prices, you have different rates for the hour, the day or the week.
I will find out at reception for you!

I was planning on getting the week... if it works! I know that it didn't work most of the time in Punta, so I was hoping it would be better here! Thanks for the info!

Ah yes folks, you should have seen Jenny leaping over tables and chairs to get away from the bride's bouquet! I myself slipped around the side of the terrace to have a smoke and managed to "miss" the whole thing!

Jenny, not sure when I'll be back. Had dreamed of doing the new village at Aqaba (Egypt) next spring, but the prices are horrific (even from Europe).

Who's the Scuba Chief these days? Is it still JP?

Bisous,
Trish

you'd better come back, Trish, if you want a new Reef Police hat!

But to get back on topic, the wi-fi can be hit or miss. When it's working well, there is a charge & you can arrange to pay it and get the password at Reception. When it's "iffy" they refund the charge for anyone who's paid, and then it's basically free for anyone with no password needed. We found that where you are in the Village makes a big difference, with the best chance of dependable access either near Reception (including in the Verve Lounge Bar area)or out by the Sea Center, where you're actually pretty close to the airport. If your room happens to be near either of those locations, you may also have wi-fi access in your room, but sometimes it almost seems to depend on which way the wind's blowing. Same thing regarding location applies for cell phone service, by the way (assuming your cell phone will work in the Bahamas; some US phones do and others don't).
Just keep in mind that it is a small island, quite far from everything, and even the "land-line" phone service is via satelite and can be quirky. That's just part of the joy of "getting away from it all".....
